9.
Now we should insert the number of the rows and columns on our contact
Sheet. Because of the fact that all the pictures have the size of 2.54x2.54 cm(72x72px), the number of the rows and columns must correspond with the Width/Image Size(1280/72=≈17) and the Height(≈14). Mark out the Rotate for Best Fit selection and insert (0)
for the Vertical and Horizontal fields. It’s necessary to
avoid getting the white spaces between the pictures. The fields for Filename As Caption are not necessary too.
10. Press OK for the program to start generating the mosaic. If we don’t have a sufficient number of pictures to fill the corresponding rectangle, it’s necessary to copy out a part of the pictures on the made work and then take them and insert in the free, white spaces. In this case it’s necessary to select the Rectangle Marquee Tool for the operation.
11. Open the main image and select it all, Copy and Paste Into file with mosaic. Change after that the Blending Mode on Hard Light as for the mosaic to get through it.
12. Now we may experiment on with the Contrast option. The mosaic’s layer should be active, open after that the next selection - Image>Adjustments>Curves (Ctrl+M) and make lighter the nuances themselves.
Let’s experiment on with the Blending Mode. We had used the Hard Light blending mode for the earlier made mosaic, but we may use also different ones which may be also very interesting as an effect (Darken, Lighten, Vivid, Linear Light).
The color variation.
We may try to change the gamma of the colors of the main image and not only – of the mosaic too, applying the Hue/Saturation option and getting another very curious effect. We also may try to get a mosaic entirely of black and white colors.
The professional photographers always use this kind of contact Sheets, because it’s the easiest way to glance over the entire pictures’ collection.

That is not a mosaic image like what professionals do. A true mosaic is lining up hundreds of small photos to make it look like one big photo from far away. Kind of like what the new OS X screensaver can do.
This is just changing transparency of a layer.

Great tutorial, however, I used Hugh Laurie playing guitar on his stick, it didn't give a good result, but next time I'll try the car ;)

is not just changing transparency ...
this is also a mosaic combining from a lot of pictures ... or maybe need to write "photomosaic" ...
examples:

The technique is not necessary to learn, as there are mosaic programs that do this better in a quarter of the time, I think one of them is named EZ mosaic, or something. Still, the tutorial wasn't too bad.

I agree with Logar. This is NOT how it's done. The real process involves analyzing the images, and finding the ones appropriate to the color/level values needed. It's a lot more complex than just blending a couple layers.
